How much does anyone really care about what happens to other people? I am cynical in this question. People help other people only if they believe they can gain something from it. (Well, there are exceptions, but I will get to that.)
And this works even among best friends and family. They are people you help, because you believe that they will help you when you need it. That is why people feel obliged to give back to people that gave them something. It may sound like a wrong line of thinking, but just try to think about it. Trump left Syria, because he wants to be liked by Americans more than he care about being liked by Kurds. What he did not anticipate was, that a lot of politicians, even in his party, want USA to look as a stable partner in war.
Here we can see the same pattern, but on a country scale. USA helps Kurds because together they have the capacity to stop ISIS. And one would not blame the Kurds them if they believed in partnership with USA.
I do not see betrayal as a big deal. If you look at all relations as only a part of a business, a great scheme of trades, betrayal is only a lost investment. And society is just a market. A market with trust. A market where are those who gain and those who pay. In this way, capitalism is very much intrinsic to our nature.
I have promised that I would get back to the few exceptions. To the people that really care about other people. They are scarce, and if you think you are one of them, you are not. By definition, because you are not doing it for nothing, if it makes you believe in your exceptionality. These people, these few good people is all it takes to make one believe society is something more than a rough, cold and terrible business.
I would like to wish for more exceptional people, but because of Gaussian distribution, we know that they would be outweighed by people from the other side of the spectrum. Thus, let us, the majority, listen to these exceptional people. Let all of us find someone like that and let none of us lose the trust in our society. Let’s hope it is a good investment.
